The Gulielmensian is the yearbook of Williams College and is commonly referred to as "the Gul." The first issue of "the Gul," published in 1856 as a 4 page tabloid newspaper, contained a list of secret societies (fraternities), catalog of officers, faculty and students, literary societies, and a calendar. The earliest issue in the Williams College Archives dates to 1861. Gulielmensian is intended to be an archaic linguistic reference to Williams. The Old French "Guillemin" and the modern "Guillaume" anglicize to "William." Notably, the first official professor of Williams was a scholar of the French language.
