Ink and watercolor portrait of Hendrick Peters Theyanoguin

Portrait in profile of Hendrick Peters Theyanoguin (1692-1755), a Mohawk leader killed in the Battle of Lake George. Surrounding the portrait is the caption in ink: "Effig[y] of King Hendric a Mohawk Indian Kill'd w[i]th Sr. W[illiam] Ionson Drawn from the Life." This portrait has often been cited as an "Effigy of Chief Hendrick," and was occasionally described by Fisher Howe in correspondence as an "aquatint," by which he probably meant watercolor; the portrait is not mechanically printed and does not utilize an aquatinted copper plate.
