Written at the Ragged Edge

"The Midwest occupies a special place in American history, literature, and political thought. It was once said to be the heart of agrarian democracy; it is now said to be at the center of national crises. The thesis tracks this shift from idyll to crisis in Midwestern historical novels, historiography, children’s books, short stories, and films. These stories plot changing attitudes toward the generically pastoral, tragic, and gothic in the region’s rural writing."
