""Under My Mother's House": An Analysis of Maternal Influence, Presence, and Queer Sexuality in Jamaica Kincaid's Coming-of-Age Narratives"

Description
"In this honors thesis, I want to build on previous readings of Kincaid, exploring the space where mother-daughter relationships intersect with the exploration of queer sexualities. I have chosen four texts—Annie John (1985), Autobiography of My Mother (1996), Lucy (1990), and My Brother (1997)—that present particularly rich mother-daughter themes, alongside the characters’ exploration of sexual experience. Ultimately, I have used this thesis to analyze the overarching influence of motherhood in Kincaid’s work, and, consequently, the desire and (im)possibility of escaping the mother (through queered spaces, distance, or death).
